2K Recruits Apex Legends Lead to Boost Challenged Hero Shooter Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Shift Comes After Lukewarm Reception

Brinkman steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming early showing last fall.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had revealed the requirement for a clearer game identity.

Ismailer expressed that the developers is now refining Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to satisfy player expectations.

A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment

This announcement echoes a similar step taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the entire content from the president's communication:

Hello Everyone—

I understand you all just completed your meeting - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a note, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented developers we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to endure.”

With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was informative. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had work to do. It revealed the necessity for a clearer brand.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the criticism to heart and revamped the title with a refreshed goal - one that’s poised to fulfill its ambition to our audience.

The trust in this project strengthens every day. To advance the incredible progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the latest Lead of 31st Union. Following several months of discussions, he comes aboard us on next week.

Ben’s management and expertise in the competitive gaming field is extensive, having dedicated the past decade and a half developing and overseeing some of the most well-known series in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.

Let’s together in welcoming him soon. We are all excited to keep seeing the progress of the game in the weeks to ahead.

David

Brinkman earlier was employed at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Details and Concept

The upcoming game was announced in last year together with a public demo. Initially, the developers described the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an thrilling advancement on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the description reads. "Face the competition with unique powers, challenges, and tests that evolve every round. Do you leave securely with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively go big, put it on the line, and hope your squad can secure victory? The decision is in your hands."

Project Ethos does not have an confirmed launch window or supported systems, but fans can look forward to further news as creation progresses.
