Around fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Police report they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Police then discovered many other marked cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests suggest the fluid was likely human blood.
"There is still no clue as to its source; officials are currently not aware of any physical harm in relation with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have asked to the community for tips.
An important official said the vandalism left him without words and required to be solved quickly.
"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he stated on social media, referring to the death of nine victims by a assailant targeting residents of migrant background in 2020.
